I have a daschhound puppy, does anyone know anything about that breed having back problems?
I've heard that that is something I need to watch out for, but I'm not really sure what I can do to prevent it. He's very hyper & loves to jump and he also sits up on his back two feet and just perches there (very cute when he does this). Are these potential problems?

- I have no solution for you except to say: THEY ARE SOOOO CUTE!!! ::::throwing treat for your cute dog to eat:::::
- I would talk to your vet about what you can do to help your dog happy and heathy. but I did find this on your daschhound. Health Problems Prone to spinal disc problems (Dachshund paralysis) and can develop heart disease, urinary tract problems, and diabetes. Dachshunds have a tendency to become overweight and lazy. This is a serious health risk, putting added strain on the back. Have fun with your puppy.
- Yes daschunds are well known for displacing their interveterbral discs. The reason for this is because they are considered a chondrodystrophic breed meaning they have abnormal bone and cartilage structure that makes them more prone for this. The interveterbral disc is the cartilage in between the veterbrae of the back. In most cases it is easily correctable after it occurs with an expensive surgery. It can be difficult to prevent this from occurring in a hyper dog. I would just try minimizing him jumping off and on furniture if you could. But otherwise get pet insurance that covers this problem because it may come up.
- I have been the happy parent of 5 daushaunds over the past 20 years and unfortunatly they are notorious for bad backs. The biggest trouble seems to be keeping them from jumping on and off things, we have tried the steps to reach the couch and bed, but they tend to ignore them. Two of mine had back problems and they were longer in the body. The one I have now---Jazzy, has strained hers twice once it took almost 6 months to heal with the help of muscle relaxers from the vet. The best way to avoid injury is avoid jumping and keep the weight down as it adds stress to the back. Enjoy your little guy, he will be a wonderful friend!!!! Shea
- It stands to reason that any dog that's 1/2 a dog tall and a dog and 1/2 long would be prone to back problems. The best prevention for this is to keep them on the floor! We have Dachshunds, in fact, we raise them. It very difficult to not let them jump in your lap or on the sofa or bed, but it's best for them if you insist that they don't. We had a problem with our Mama dog jumping on everything she could, till she got pregnant and couldn't! Now, after her "puppy fat" is gone, she seems to not want to go back to her old habits, and we'll not let the puppies start out what could end up being a deadly practice for them. Try praising your dog when he/she naps on the mat on the floor. If they jump up where you are, try ignoring them. Soon they will get the message that "I'm loved MORE on the floor" and stop the jumping. After ignoring them , tho, be sure to get on their level and just praise them and love them, after all, that's what they live for.. to please you...
