Degenerative Disc Disease Questions
Is degenerative disc disease and arthritis the same thing? My husband was recently in a auto accident at work. They did a CT Scan of his head and neck. The doctor said that the CT Scan found that he has arthritis in his neck. After receiving the report ourselves to take to another doctor it reads: "There is minimal early degenerative disc disease with osteophyte formation predominatly at C5-6. " My husband never had a problem with his neck before the accident . Now he is in pain and it pops and crunches when he moves it. Are they the same thing? What treatments are there for it? He is going to see a Orthopaedic Specialist but not for another 3 weeks.

I recently had a neck xray and found that I have degenerative disc disease (I believe this is or is related to osteoarthritis). I was wondering if anyone out there also has this and had success with physical therapy, chiropractic, etc....as opposed to surgery.. I would like to avoid surgery if possible. Any info is appreciated.....Thanks!

It is in the Thoratic Lumbar. I think it said L4 and L5.

I have disc herniation and degenerative disc disease. What do you think about surgery? I am in a lot of pain and have been for more than 3 years. My condition has slowly worsened. I have tried physical therapy, chiropractic, braces, epidural injections, and pain killers. I am now scheduled for surgery, either disc replacement and / or fusion and opening of the foramen. I have heard horror stories, and also encouraging one. If anyone has ever gone through this, I would like to hear about it and what you think.

I suffer from degenerative disc disease. Any suggestions on treatment other than physical therapy? My doctor wants me to go for PT, but my back hurts worse than it did when I was originally diagnosed with three herniated discs. He looked over notes from my chart that were over two years old. I am really shocked he didn't want me to go for a MRI. I take several pain/muscle medications. Unfortunately, I can only take them at night. I am a stay at home father, so I take care of my daughter during the day. Can anyone suggest anything, please??????
Does the Social Security Administration view Degenerative Disc Disease as a disability? I was diagnosed with DDD. As it stands I can't sit, walk or stand for long periods of time. My career is in the field were I must do all of the above and more. As it stands I can't work and am thinking about applying for SSI, due to the DDD disability. I know SSI does take you through a long drawn out process when applying for services, what ever thay may be. I was wondering has anyone ever applied for and received SSI for DDD? Is it a long process? Can someone give me tips for applying, and information regarding the rigorous process of getting the Government to give US Citizens their fare share.
degenerative disc disease? have you or any one you know been dx with degenerative disc disease? how was it treated...do you ever get over it...how painful is it...
They say I have Degenerative Disc Disease .? I am 27 years old. I have a very physical job at work. One day I was moving a piece of equipment that is about 600lbs with a pallet type jack. The jack got hung in a crack and took everything I had to get it out. When the jack finally came I feel down. I weigh about 255lbs but I am in pretty good shape. I then started to have lower back pains and left leg pains. Does that mean That I have Degenerative Disc Disease. I went to the doctor and was treated for a towrn lumbar muscle. But the pain only got worse. Then after about 1 1/2 months I had a MRI and the doctor said I had Degenerative Disc Disease. What I am wondering is when I hit the ground in that month and a half could my disc go dry and the doctor think that I have Degenerative Disc Disease. Or could the problem be from the fall. If you could just tell me about how long it takes for a disc to go dry or is it always Degenerative Disc Disease. I can not get any answers from anyone. I have never had any back problems in the past.
Am I crazy for having this surgery? Degenerative Disc Disease...? I am 29 with really bad degenerative disc disease on three levels S1-L4-5. I have tried everything, physical therapy, pain killers, exercises and nothing works. I'm scheduled to have a multi level fusion at the end of the month and I'm scared out of my mind. From what I have read this extensive surgery is rarely done, but my doctor thinks it will help. I just want to feel my age and be able to walk around . Am I crazy for doing the surgery?
Anyone found a good solution for degenerative disc disease? I am 21 and have been diagnosed with Degenerative Disk Disease. I have always been very healthy, and do not smoke, so i believe it is quite rare at my age. I have had pain on and off for over 2 years now, and currently for the last 6 months straight. I used to play basketball, it was my life, and in a way still is, I really just wanna know if I'll be able to play again. If anyone has had DDD and found a good solution that has worked for them please let me know your story. I have tried all the exercieses, anti-inflam., and chiropractor for months but have yet to find a solution besides injections or surgey which looks to be next on my list. I dont need a total painfree solution, I can play through pain, but it totally locks my core up when i try to do anything. So if anyone has any solutions, or has had the injections or surgey please let me know what happened good or bad. I kno even doctors arent always rt, so i want to get some other opinions from people who have been thru this, thx Yes I did have electric stem. for 3 months along with the chiropractor and therapy and i also used a lumber trackion all with no results good or bad. The treatment did not start that aggressive with all those things, but we tried to add things and build my strength up but it didnt seem to help at all. I'm getting my mri this week and seeing my orthopedic the next week with results and what he thinks is best to do, I just want to get other peoples opinions and experiences, so that i can develop better questions and ideas to ask my doctor. Thanks a lot for your answers so far, anymore would be greatly appreciated...
Does anyone have personal experience with bulging lumbar discs and degenerative disc disease? I recently got diagnosed (through MRI and X-Ray) with a bulging disc in my lumbar (low spine) region as well as minimal degeneration of one disc in the same area. I'm looking for answers from those who have personal experience with pain management. I've done research so I don't need websites explaining what these things are, just input on what others have done to manage the problem. I'm already on NSAIDs and do not want to resort to any injections as of now. So non-medicinal advice would be most appreciated. I'm a young adult, a competitive horseback rider and I am active in core strengthening classes such as pilates and yoga. I cannot physically lift weights because of a previous shoulder injury. I am also currently in a physical therapy program. Thanks!
Might an extra vertebrae at the L-5 level cause degenerative disc disease & numerous disc surgeries? I've been diagnosed with DDD, had 3 disc surgeries at the L-4-L-5 level-am trying to find if there's any connection between the disc problems and an extra vertebrae, and what possible problems an extra vertebrae below L-5 could cause. No one can give me any specifics as of yet. Dealing with continual pain, recurring numbness/weakness in legs, some peripheral neuropathy. Some doctors have been unfamiliar with the issue of an extra vertebrae, others say up to 20% of population may have an extra vertebrae, needless to say, I'm confused!
I was diagnosed with Degenerative Disc Disease does anyone know about this? I was diagnosed with DDD a couple of months ago. I've been reading about the disease on the web, and have not heard anyone mention pain, and poor circulation in their legs and feet. I also have neck pain and severe muscle spasms in my legs, neck and back. Has anyone experienced this. I am also taking Hydrocodone. I tried 800mg Motrin, Naproxen, and Baclofen none of these seem to work, only the Hydrocodone. I really don't want to get hung up on the pills. I am starting physical therapy next week, and would like to know if anyone has tried other meds besides these to ease the pain, and how good are they at relieving pain. Should I see a pain specialist. I don't want to turn into an addict, but the pain is unbearable.
I have a bulging disc and degenerative disc disease has anyone had success with an inversion table? I am on serious pain meds but am getting tired of taking them, also went to first treatment of PT and traction table today, and I am suffering. I had to take 5 of these tablets (percocet 7.5) over three hours to get any relief. Has anyone tried an inversion table and had success before I go buy one? Any other success stories besides a shot into the spine? I don't think I can do that. I would almost rather have surgery than have a shot into my spine I really really really do not do well with needles. And if so what is a good model or brand name? Has anyone heard of invertek? They are on eBay for like $100.
